The Development of the OUHSDRA
In late spring 2013, the OUHSD informed District retirees by letter that they were making major changes to the insurance program for retirees. The new program required that vested retirees on Medicare enroll in new Medicare Advantage plans, and would no longer be covered by the District’s plan that covers active employees and vested retirees under the age of 65.
After October 1, 2013, when the new plans went into effect, there were numerous retirees who suffered major problems with both their medical and prescription plans, so a Medical Benefits Committee was formed to meet with District and insurance representatives to work through these problems. On November 19, 2013, the newly formed OUHSD Retirees’ Leadership Committee hosted a meeting for vested retirees to formally adopt bylaws for the new association. It was from this meeting that the Retirees’ committee realized there was a need for advocacy in reference to their guaranteed lifetime medical benefits. The OUHSDRA committee meets monthly to discuss how we can better assist our retirees. We also host an annual meeting to present updated information. |
